Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is a highly popular antioxidant and is known as a required component in the production of collagen, which is what provides skin its suppleness and elasticity. Vitamin C has also been shown to help reduce the appearance of age spots while providing some protection from external environmental stressors. It is widely used in skin care applications.

Ascorbic acid is the most well-researched vitamin for skincare use. It is a powerful antioxidant that helps to prevent damage by neutralising free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause DNA damage and lead to premature ageing. It also has a relevant role in collagen production, helping regulate and promote it, and stabilising this protein’s structure.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals, environmental damage and aging. This water-soluble vitamin helps reduce wrinkles by decreasing cross-linking of collagen fibers. It also aids in collagen synthesis and increases antioxidant production in the cell

Use: Add to water phase of formula, usual final concentration 0.5-10 %. Tip: sprinkle vitamin C powder slowly to the water under constant stirring to assure that everything dissolves completely. Products should be formulated at pH 4-5 for best results. For external use only.

Ascorbic acid, whilst soluble in water, is unstable in water. It should be formulated either is a water free formulation, or stored in the fridge where it will last for approximately 4 weeks from manufacture.

Ascorbic acid is highly sensitive to air and light; and to achieve its stabilisation in cosmetic preparations, it has been suggested to use ascorbic acid in microencapsulation form, in combination with other chemical moieties such as vitamin-E, by the control of pH and electrolyte concentration and use of stabilising agents like citric, tartaric, or ferulic acids

CAS Number: 50-81-7

Chemical Structure: Ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, has the chemical formula C6H8O6.

Molecular Weight: The molecular weight of ascorbic acid is approximately 176.12 g/mol.

Appearance: Ascorbic acid is a white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals.

Solubility: Ascorbic acid is highly soluble in water and is also soluble in alcohol, but it has limited solubility in non-polar solvents. It is generally unstable in water.

Melting Point: Ascorbic acid has a melting point of approximately 190-192°C (374-378°F).

Stability: Ascorbic acid is sensitive to heat, light, and oxygen, and it can degrade when exposed to these conditions. It should be stored in a cool, dry place in a tightly sealed container.

Purity: High-quality ascorbic acid used in supplements and food applications should have a high degree of purity, typically exceeding 99%.

Acidity: Ascorbic acid is a weak acid and can act as a pH regulator in various applications.

Function: Ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, is an essential nutrient for humans and plays a crucial role in various biological processes. It is known for its antioxidant properties and its role in collagen synthesis, wound healing, and immune system support.

Health Benefits: Ascorbic acid is used as a dietary supplement to prevent and treat vitamin C deficiency. It is also utilized in the food industry as a preservative and antioxidant to prevent the oxidation of food products.

Formulations: Ascorbic acid is available in various forms, including powders, tablets, capsules, and as an ingredient in a wide range of food and beverage products.
