Ylang Ylang - "The Flower of the Flowers" oil. A highly fragrant flower which produces an exquisite essential oil. Ylang Ylang oil was originally produced for the perfume industry. The tree is commonly grown and the oil from the delicate flowers are distilled in the Comores Islands, and Madagascar. The tree may have originated from the Philippines and Indonesia.

Ylang Ylang Number 3 refers to the third fraction of steam-distilled Ylang Ylang oil, collected later in the process, resulting in a milder, less floral, and more earthy scent compared to earlier fractions like Extra or Number 1. It is cost-effective and commonly used in soaps, candles, and general cosmetics where a lighter fragrance is suitable. This fraction is ideal for applications that don't require the full complexity of higher-grade Ylang Ylang oils.

Ylang Ylang trees in plantations are kept under 2.5 metres tall by pruning every two months, starting from maturity at 4–5 years, with a lifespan of up to 70 years. Their delicate flowers, hand-picked during May–July and November–December, yield essential oil only when fully mature. A tree produces 5–100 kg of flowers annually, depending on conditions like rainfall, though oil yield declines with age.

Ylang-ylang essential oil is valued for its various potential therapeutic benefits and uses:

Aromatherapy and Emotional Well-being: The intoxicating and uplifting aroma of ylang-ylang oil is frequently utilized in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance mood. It is believed to have a calming effect on the mind and may help alleviate anxiety, depression, and nervous tension.

Skin and Hair Care: Ylang-ylang essential oil is often incorporated into skincare and hair care products due to its beneficial properties. It is believed to help balance oil production in the skin and scalp, making it suitable for both oily and dry skin types. Ylang-ylang oil is also thought to support hair health and promote a lustrous appearance.

Aphrodisiac: Ylang-ylang oil has a reputation as an aphrodisiac, known for its sensual and exotic scent. It is often used in perfumery and as a component in romantic and sensual blends.

Diffusing Ylang Ylang Oil in the environment helps to uplift the mood while acting as an aphrodisiac. Ylang Ylang helps to balance the oiliness of the skin and is suitable to use on acne-prone skin. It is noted for its natural ability to help relax, promote tranquility, and create a sense of calm. It is also believed to have antioxidant properties and helps to protect the skin's moisture barrier, and reduce the signs of aging. It is also used to revitalize the hair. Many body care products are formulated using Ylang Ylang and are advertised for its ability to provide rejuvenated look to the skin.

Ylang Ylang oil is insoluble in water and alchohol, but soluble in other oils. It should be added to the formula as is, in the fat phase of the formulation, and can be used at 1-100%, as it can be used neat in massage oils.

Blends well with : Bergamot, Jasmine,  Mimosa, Peru Balsam, Rose, Rosewood, and Vetiver.

Third Extraction (Ylang-Ylang III)

Scent Profile: The third extraction, known as "Ylang-Ylang III," has a much milder and more subdued scent. It’s less floral and sweet compared to the first extraction and can sometimes have a slightly earthy or woody note.

Chemical Composition: This fraction is less concentrated with fragrant compounds and has more of the heavier molecules, which are less volatile.

Uses: Ylang-Ylang III is often used in products where a lighter scent is desired, such as in soaps, lotions, and other cosmetics. It’s also more cost-effective and is used in formulations where a strong fragrance isn't needed.
