Macadamia integrifolia is an Australian tree with holly-like leaves. The fruit is borne in a case enclosing an extremely hard spherical nut.
In cosmetics, refined macadamia nut oil contributes to the overall emollient and conditioning properties of formulations. Its high content of palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid also found in the sebum of human skin, makes it particularly beneficial for maintaining skin suppleness and providing a protective barrier against moisture loss.
Macadamia oil contains vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps neutralise free radicals and supports skin health. Its gentle and non-comedogenic nature makes refined macadamia nut oil suitable for a wide range of skin types, including sensitive and dry skin, making it a popular choice for those seeking natural and nourishing ingredients.
Macadamia Oil is a fantastic replenishing oil for skin's moisture barrier. It is high in mono-unsaturated fatty acids, contains palmitoleic acid (promotes younger looking skin), as well as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. It has been reputed to soothe, cool and revitalise the look of the skin and is considered very safe to use in facial and baby care products.
In general, nuts, seeds, and legumes are excellent sources of phytosterols, both for the body and for skin. Phytosterols can help replenish and restore ageing skin, keeping it pliant and supple.
Macadamia oil is insoluble in water and alchohol, but soluble in other oils. It should be added to the formula as is, in the fat phase of the formulation, and can be used at 1-100%, as it can be used neat in massage oils.
