Isopropyl Myristate is an ester of isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) and myristic acid (a fatty acid that naturally occurs in coconut and palm oils). It is a very lightweight emollient and can be used like a carrier oil in many applications.
Isopropyl Myristate is included in formulas to dramatically reduce the greasy/oily feel; it’s brilliant in recipes with large amounts of butters that are famous for a heavier skin feel (like shea). Isopropyl Myristate is also a great lightweight emollient; you can include it in recipes as an alternative to a liquid carrier oil to make for a lighter, faster-absorbing product.
At higher concentrations it can also be used in products like makeup removers.
Enhances Penetration: IPM helps active ingredients in cosmetics penetrate the skin more effectively by reducing the surface tension, making it a great carrier in formulations like creams, lotions, and serums.
Increases Bioavailability: It ensures better delivery of active compounds like vitamins, antioxidants, or other beneficial agents
Lightweight Feel: It provides a silky, smooth texture to formulations without leaving an oily residue, making it ideal for products that require a lightweight and non-greasy finish.
Softens Skin: Acts as an emollient, helping to soften and condition the skin, leaving it feeling smooth and hydrated.
Enhances Application: IPM improves the spreadability of products, making them easier to apply evenly across the skin. This is useful for makeup, creams, and other topical products.
Won’t Clog Pores: IPM is non-comedogenic, which means it is less likely to clog pores or cause acne. It’s ideal for formulations aimed at oily and acne-prone skin.
Matte Finish: IPM is used to reduce the greasy feel of heavier oils and butters in formulations. It helps give products a matte finish, which is why it’s often used in lotions and sunscreens.
Dissolves Oils: IPM acts as a solvent for other oils and ingredients in cosmetic formulations, ensuring the mixture remains stable and homogenous.
Improves Stability: Helps dissolve other substances in the formula, making it a common ingredient in makeup removers, creams, and serums.
Locks in Moisture: IPM helps create a light, protective film on the skin’s surface, locking in moisture and improving hydration without feeling heavy or greasy.
Enhances Texture: Smooth and Silky Feel: It enhances the sensory qualities of a product, giving it a smooth and luxurious feel when applied to the skin.
Storage: Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Shelf Life: Up to 2 years when stored properly in sealed containers.
Safety Considerations:
Non-Irritant: Generally non-irritating to the skin when used at appropriate concentrations.
Non-Comedogenic: Does not clog pores, making it suitable for acne-prone skin.
Flammable: Handle with care in formulations exposed to heat or flame
