Castor Oil (Riccinus Communis), also known as Palma Christi or "Hand of Christ" is well regarded as an excellent healing oil, whose properties have been used for over 400 years. Along with Olive oil, castor oil has been used for millenia and feature predominantly in many healing traditions.

Castor oil is an eighteen carbon fatty acid, however if differs from other such oils as it is easily absorbed into the skin. The oil is high in Riconoleic acid- a unique acid the has one polar group, making it slightly more soluble in water than other oils,  meaning that when dry it forms a solid film that can have water-binding properties.

One of the key features of castor oil is its high ricinoleic acid content, a monounsaturated fatty acid with remarkable anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. This sets castor oil apart from other vegetable oils, making it a valuable ingredient in both traditional and modern medicine. The oil has a slightly viscous and pale yellow consistency, and its distinctive aroma is relatively mild.

Castor is good for skin that is prone to congestion as it is low on the comedogenic scale. Castor oil can help smooth the skin, even the appearance of skin tone and minimise the appearance of dark spots.  Castor oil has a slightly different chemistry to other carrier oil, because it contains another polar group.

Castor oil is rich and sticky - meaning it easily forms an occlusive barrier on the skin and therefor it makes it the perfect carrier oil for lip formulation, makeup removers, cleansing applications and dissolving pigments.

Castor oil can be used neat by massaging into nails and calluses, and added to shampoos and conditioners to treat split hairs and add volume. In small amounts, it is added to cold-processed soap formulations to increase lather, and is a popular ingredient in lip balms.

Castor oil is insoluble in water and alchohol, but soluble in other oils. It should be added to the formula as is, in the fat phase of the formulation, and can be used at 1-100%, as it can be used neat in massage oils.

Shelf Life: Slow to go rancid when the oil is kept closed at a temperature below 18°C and kept away from light. Users can expect a shelf life of up to 2 years with proper storage conditions (cool, out of direct sunlight). Refrigeration after opening is recommended. Please refer to the Certificate of Analysis for current Best Before Date.
