Brazil nut oil, extracted from the seeds of the Bertholletia excelsa tree native to the Amazon rainforest, is characterised by its unique composition and a range of beneficial properties. One of the distinctive features of Brazil nut oil is its exceptionally high content of selenium, a powerful antioxidant that plays a crucial role in neutralising free radicals. This antioxidant activity contributes to the oil's potential in protecting the skin from oxidative stress, thereby promoting a healthy and youthful complexion.
Brazil nut oil is rich in essential fatty acids, including oleic acid and linoleic acid, which provide excellent moisturising properties. Its emollient nature makes it a valuable addition to skincare formulations, helping to soften and hydrate the skin, and it is particularly beneficial for dry or mature skin types.
The consistency of Brazil nut oil is light and non-greasy, allowing it to be easily absorbed into the skin. Its nutty aroma adds a pleasant touch to cosmetic products. Brazil nuts consist of approximately 67% oil, which Brazilian natives utilise in cooking and within skin and hair care applications.
Brazil Nut oil contains a high concentraion of Selenium and Vitamin E, which deliver extremely effective antioxidant and antiageing properties with their superior ability to fight free radicals. Selenium also assists in maintaining the stratum corneum.
Brazil nut oil is insoluble in water and alchohol, but soluble in other oils. It should be added to the formula as is, in the fat phase of the formulation, and can be used at 1-100%, as it can be used neat in massage oils.
As a base oil, brazil nut oil can be used from 5-100%. The light colour and only slighly nutty odour makes it perfect as a promary oil for lotions and creams.
