Evening primrose oil (EPO) is a botanical oil derived from the seeds of the evening primrose plant (Oenothera biennis). It is commonly used in cosmetics and skincare products due to its potential beneficial properties for the skin.

Evening primrose oil is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is an omega-6 fatty acid. GLA is known for its potential skin-nourishing and anti-inflammatory properties. The high content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) in evening primrose oil makes it beneficial for maintaining healthy skin. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid that helps to support the skin's barrier function, improve moisture retention, and promote overall skin health.

In cosmetics, EPO is often used for the following purposes:

Moisturisation: Evening primrose oil is believed to help improve skin hydration and maintain the skin's moisture barrier. It is often included in moisturisers, creams, and lotions to provide a hydrating effect. The GLA content of Evening Primrose Oil is in the range of 8-10%. The level of linoleic acid is one of the highest found in all oils, and therefore is reportedly efficacious for treating Trans-epidermal water loss and epidermal hyper-proliferation.

Anti-Aging: The high content of essential fatty acids in EPO can contribute to skin smoothness and elasticity. It may help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making it a popular ingredient in anti-aging skincare products.

Skin Calming: Evening primrose oil has been associated with soothing properties that can help alleviate skin redness, irritation, and inflammation. It may be used in formulations for sensitive or reactive skin types.

Skin Health: Some studies suggest that the GLA content in evening primrose oil may have a positive impact on various skin conditions, including eczema, acne, and rosacea. It may help to reduce inflammation and promote overall skin health.

Evening Primrose oil is insoluble in water and alchohol, but soluble in other oils. It should be added to the formula as is, in the fat phase of the formulation, and can be used at 1-100%, as it can be used neat in massage oils.
