Cetearth-20 and Cetearyl Alcohol is a nonionic, self-bodying emulsifying wax consisting of a high quality grade of Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Ceteareth-20 in defined proportions. Cetearth-20 and Cetearyl Alcohol are both common ingredients found in cosmetic and personal care products.

Cetearyl Alcohol is a mixture of fatty alcohols consisting predominantly of cetyl and stearyl alcohols. It is often used as an emollient, thickener, and emulsifier in skincare and hair care products. It has a waxy texture and is derived from natural sources such as coconut oil or palm oil.

Cetearth-20, on the other hand, is a specific type of cetearyl alcohol that has been ethoxylated, which means it has undergone a process to make it more water-soluble. It is also known as Ceteareth-20. This ingredient is often used as a surfactant, emulsifier, and solubiliser in cosmetic formulations.

It produces highly stable emulsions and can incorporate most emollient materials normally used in these systems. As an emulsifier base it is both useful and economical, as it simplifies the formulation of basic oil-in-water creams and lotions and confers stabilising, as well as emulsifying effects, when compounded into more sophisticated systems.

It may be used as the primary or secondary emulsifier in a wide variety of lotions, creams and pastes. Because it is not an ester and is nonionic, it can be used in systems far from neutral pH, such as hair relaxers, depilatories, creme lotion developers, and AHA skin care creams.

Both Cetearyl Alcohol and Cetearth-20 are considered safe for use in personal care products, as they are generally non-irritating and non-sensitizing. However, some people with particularly sensitive skin may experience adverse reactions to these ingredients.

It is worth noting that some concerns have been raised about the environmental impact of using ingredients derived from palm oil, such as cetearyl alcohol. The production of palm oil has been linked to deforestation, habitat destruction, and other environmental issues. As such, many companies are moving towards using more sustainable and environmentally friendly ingredients in their products.

Ceteareth-20:

Chemical Name: Ceteareth-20

INCI Name: Ceteareth-20

CAS Number: 68439-49-6

Appearance: White, waxy solid in flake or powder form.

Odour: Minimal to no odor.

Melting Point: Typically melts within the range of its fatty alcohol components (cetyl and stearyl alcohols).

Solubility: Dispersible in water and soluble in oils and organic solvents.

Usage: Commonly used as an emulsifier and surfactant in cosmetic formulations.

Function: Helps stabilize oil-in-water emulsions, allowing the blending of water and oil-based ingredients. Improves the texture and appearance of creams and lotions.

Combined Use:

Cetearyl Alcohol and Ceteareth-20 are often used together in formulations to take advantage of their synergistic effects. Cetearyl Alcohol provides emollient properties and contributes to the overall texture, while Ceteareth-20 assists in emulsification, ensuring the even distribution of water and oil phases in cosmetic products. This combination is common in creams, lotions, and other skincare formulations. Always refer to the specific product's technical data sheet and the documentation provided by the manufacturer for precise and accurate information on the Cetearyl Alcohol and Ceteareth-20 products in use.
