Bilberries (Vaccinium Myrtillus) are small, blue berries native to Northern Europe. Research shows that bilberries are among the wild grown berries, fruits and vegetables with the highest antioxidant levels, in particular Anthocyanin, a potent antioxidant.
In skincare, bilberry extract has gained popularity for its ability to promote skin health and combat signs of aging. Rich in anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants, bilberry extract helps protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors such as UV radiation and pollution. This extract is also known for its anti-inflammatory properties, making it a valuable ingredient in skincare formulations aimed at soothing irritated skin and reducing redness. Additionally, bilberry extract contains natural acids that contribute to gentle exfoliation, promoting a smoother and more radiant complexion.
Bilberries contain elevated levels of anthocyanins, which are highly effective antioxidants which can help prevent or reverse damage to the cells caused by free radical oxidation, They do this by maintaining normal blood flow in the fine capillary blood vessels that nourish body tissue. Bilberry extract is a superior conditioning active ingredient that can help improve the health of the dermis.
Bilberries contain elevated levels of tannin, making them an excellent astringent and suitbale for toner and spritzer formulations.
The use of bilberry extract in skincare extends to addressing concerns such as fine lines and hyperpigmentation. The antioxidants present in bilberries may assist in neutralising free radicals that contribute to premature aging, potentially reducing the appearance of wrinkles and promoting a youthful skin texture.
The extract's ability to inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in melanin production can contribute to a more even skin tone, making bilberry extract a sought-after ingredient in products designed to address age spots and hyperpigmentation. Its multifaceted benefits and natural components make bilberry extract a valuable addition to skincare routines, offering a holistic approach to maintaining healthy and vibrant skin.Bilberry is one of the best sources of antioxidant compounds known as anthocyanins, polyphenolic chemicals that give bilberries their dark colour.
A glycerine extract is a water-soluble extract of a plant or fruit infused into vegetable glycerine. As glycerine is a humectant, not only do you get the benefits from the plant, but you also get the moisturising properties of the glycerine itself.
Glycerine extracts are generally recommended for use between 3-6% of your total product. They are safe to use in higher percentages but the end product can be sticky with a higher volume of glycerine. They are used in products with a water phase and added when the temperature s below 40C.
Note that while bilberry contains antioxidants known as tannins, the amounts are low and unlikely to pose a risk to skin. Tannins are one of the antioxidant chemicals in some plants (the most well-known being witch hazel) that offer benefits and risks for skin when they comprise a larger portion of a plant’s antioxidants.
