Micellar Water

Lemon Myrtle Micellar Water

Micellar water is a skin care product that can help cleanse and tone the skin. In addition to promoting skin hydration, removing dirt and oil, and helping keep skin clear, it's suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It's also mostly water, so this is a product best made rather than bought - this version is much better than any Mecca purchased variety!

The Micellar water is made by combining water or hydrosols, humectants and a mild surfactant to help lift oil and impurities off the skin. This product must be preserved as it contain a high concentration of water and botanicals.

pH adjustment is also of utmost importance with this formulation as we want to mimic the pH of the skin, and therefore the pH of the product must be adjusted to 5.2-5.8.

METHOD:

  1. Preparation: Ensure all equipment and containers are clean and sanitised to prevent contamination.

  2. Measure out all ingredients accurately using a digital scale or measuring spoons.

  3. Mixing the Base: Pour the distilled water and lemon micellar water into the mixing vessel. This will act as the base for your micellar water.

  4. Adding Surfactants: Slowly add Capric/Caprylic Glucoside to the water while stirring continuously. This surfactant will help in the formation of micelles which trap and remove impurities from the skin.

  5. Add Polysorbate 20 to the mixture, stirring thoroughly to ensure it is well incorporated. Polysorbate 20 acts as an emulsifier, helping to disperse oils and other ingredients evenly throughout the solution.

  6. Incorporating Humectants and Preservatives: Add Propanediol (5%) to the mixture. This ingredient acts as a humectant, helping to keep the skin hydrated.

  7. Add Geogard (preservative) to the mixture. This will ensure the product remains free from microbial contamination and extends its shelf life. With the preservative added, the shelf life of this product should be about 12 months.

  8. Optional Fragrance: If desired, add a small amount of fragrance (1%) to the mixture. Ensure it is cosmetic grade and skin-safe. Stir thoroughly to distribute the fragrance evenly.

  9. Final Mixing:  Continue stirring the mixture until all ingredients are fully dissolved and the solution is clear. If using a magnetic stirrer, let it run for 5-10 minutes to ensure thorough mixing.

  10. Packaging:  Pour the finished micellar water into clean, sterilised containers. Ensure they are sealed tightly to prevent contamination. Need help with sterilising containers? Read our post here.

  11. Storage:  Store the micellar water in a cool, dark place to maintain its effectiveness and shelf life. Label the containers with the date of production and ingredients.

  12. Usage: To use, apply the micellar water to a cotton pad and gently wipe over the face to cleanse and remove makeup. There is no need to rinse after use.
